Discover Music: Discover Life's (DMDL) mission is to enhance student academic achievement and life skills through supportive mentoring and by developing and implementing standards-based curricula. Using a direct instructional approach that connects every day life to music, DMDL helps students improve perceptive listening, critical thinking and creative participation skills. Through practical application and integrated standards-based content, DMDL addresses national and state goals for reading, math and fine arts.
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Title I provide supplementary instruction to students who are educationally disadvantaged and failing or most at risk of failing to meet high academic standards. Supplemental Tutoring assistance is based on assessment of students' needs, supports the regular classroom curriculum and State academic standards. Instruction may take place during the school day, before or after school, or in the summer.
DMDL is contracted by Chicago Public Schools to provide NCLB Title I supplementary instructional services to Private Schools located in the Chicago School District attendance area. These services include direct instruction, interventional tutoring, academic counseling, and fine arts. DMDL is seeking to hire Tutors for these schools.
Tutors will be assigned to nonpublic faith-based schools throughout the Chicago Public School District attendance area, providing 2-10 hours of academic tutoring per week. Candidates must be able to work independently, display good judgment and possess excellent organization and communication skills. A bachelor’s degree in education or related field and minimal classroom teaching experience is required. An interest and understanding of various artistic disciplines is very beneficial as well. This position requires a contracted commitment for 28 weeks; from September 2008 through May 2009 (summer 2008 positions may also be available). Criminal background checks will be conducted on selected candidates. Selected candidates will also be required to attend all scheduled trainings and professional development meetings.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Tutor individuals and small groups of up to 10 students
- Prepare interventional tutoring plans for each student or group of students as needed, utilizing creative instructional methods that compliment each child’s learning modality
- Work to reach all students via a variety of teaching methods
- Employ effective classroom management techniques to create the optimum learning environment, enabling students to achieve their highest potential
- Communicate regularly with classroom teachers, school administrators and parents regarding student progress
- Work closely with DMDL on-site school team to help create a cohesive learning experience for students
- Maintain accurate attendance documentation and student class work
- Attend ongoing training/support meetings with DMDL staff (approx every 6 wks)
- Operate within DMDL and Title I instructional strategies and protocols

Candidates shall possess good relationship building skills, as well as the desire and ability to motivate, mentor and encourage students.
